2.12 Digital Kawaii Drawing
Objective
Venture into digital illustration by tracing, coloring, and shading a Kawaii subject you first drew on paper.
- Draw the full body of a subject in Kawaii style on paper.
- Take a photo of your drawing.
- Add the photo to a 3840×2160 px Photopea.com document.
- Create a transparent layer above your photo.
- Trace your lines (make sure there are no gaps in the outer lines).
- Select the outside of your lines and invert that selection.
- On a new layer, fill the selection with gray to become your “shape” layer.
- Add a new layer above your shape and create a clipping mask.

The goal is to learn this layer structure: Drawing on top, shape on bottom, and color/shading in the middle.
Novice (50%)
Student does not complete all steps, has improper layers, or submits work incorrectly.
Apprentice (80%)
Student completes most steps, has some improper layers or a weak attention to detail.
Master (100%)
Student completes all steps with proper layers and a strong attention to detail.
Grandmaster (Extra Credit)
Student uses blending modes to elevate their image even further with expert shading.
