Objective

Create a vibrant drawing of an animal's eye through the use of gradients and burnishing.

Dragon eye by Zelina

1) Find a reference
Choose and print a photograph of a close-up animal eye.

2) Prepare your paper
Lightly draw a 1/2 inch border in pencil.

3) Outline your drawing
Use the “grid method” to outline the shape of the eye and surrounding features. Erase the grid.

4) Color the base layer
Lightly introduce color pencil to the entire drawing with an “underpainting.” The more gradients, the better!

5) Burnish
Going from the lightest colors to darkest, use hard pressure and burnishing to complete the drawing. Remember to keep gradients!
