1.4 From Paper to Screen

Objective

Venture into digital illustration by tracing, coloring, and shading a favorite animal you drew on paper.

  1. Draw the full body of an animal on paper.
  2. Take a photo of your drawing.
  3. Add the photo to a 1920×1080 px Photoshop document.
  4. Create a transparent layer above your photo.
  5. Trace your lines (make sure there are no gaps in the outer lines).
  6. Select the outside of your lines and invert that selection.
  7. On a new layer, fill the selection with gray to become your “shape” layer.
  8. Add a new layer above your shape and create a clipping mask.
  9. Color.
  10. Shade.
Novice (50%)

Student does not complete all steps, has improper layers, or submits work incorrectly.

Apprentice (80%)

Student completes most steps, has some improper layers or a weak attention to detail.

Master (100%)

Student completes all steps with proper layers and a strong attention to detail.

Grandmaster (Extra Credit)

Student uses blending modes to elevate their image even further with expert shading.
