1.6 Creature Feature

Objective

Practice creature design, clean lines, and basic shading while illustrating a favorite animal or mythical creature.

  • Choose a pet, favorite animal, or mythical creature.
  • Create a mood board with 10+ inspirational photos and illustrations of your chosen creature in different poses.
  • Add the link of your mood board to your site.
  • Draw 6+ poses of your creature. These should be fast sketches with broad ideas only. Feel free to play with the creature’s features here, too. Challenge yourself by not tracing from your mood board examples!
  • Choose your favorite pose that easily shows your creature’s form.
  • Enlarge it and hide your other poses in the layers panel.
  • Draw a refined sketch layer of your creature by tracing and improving your enlarged pose layer.
  • Draw and “carve” a clean lines layer by tracing and refining your sketch layer. Make sure there are no gaps in the outline, also!
  • Color your drawing with the color sandwich (Shape + Color + Lines).
  • Shade your drawing with a Soft Light shading layer.
  • Add a gradient background and shadow.
Photoshop: click on File > Export > Export As and select the JPG format.
Upload your illustration into a gallery block on your WordPress.com website. Describe the objective of the project and how you approached it.
