1.5 Spear Maiden

target
Objective

Convert a BW character into color using blending modes and gradient maps.

Download SpearMaiden.psd. Create a color palette on a new layer. A common choice is to have a small pop of color within a range of more neutral/muted tones.
Use multiple layers and blending modes to introduce color with the brush tool.
  • Add your 1st overlay layer and clip it to the SpearMaiden layer (blending mode set to “overlay”). Paint your chosen base colors to the entire character. This will not look good yet… that is ok!
  • Add a 2nd overlay clipped layer and carefully add color again. This will start to mix with the underlaying layers to create more vibrancy. Subtly vary the hues for a more interesting and realistic effect.
  • Add a normal clipped layer. Paint more detail and variation of color. Using brush sensitivity and opacity is key.
  • Add as many normal and overlay layers as needed until complete. Feel free to use snapshot layers (SHIFT + CTRL + ALT + ‘E’) or layer merging to your benefit.
Follow the tutorial below (it begins at 3:48) to try an alternative coloring method using gradient maps for specific sections (such as skin or armor).
Photoshop: click on File > Export > Export As and select the JPG format.
Upload your colored version into a gallery block on your WordPress.com website. Describe the objective of the project and how you approached it.
