Objective

Create a vibrant drawing of an animal's eye through the use of gradients and burnishing.

Dragon eye by Zelina

1) Find a reference
Choose and print a photograph of a close-up animal eye.

2) Prepare your paper
Lightly draw a 1/2 inch border and a grid with 2×2 inch squares.

3) Prepare your reference
Draw a 5.5×4 grid on your printed image (the size of the squares depend on the size of your image). You will need to strategically place the grid to center the eye and match the ratio of your paper.

4) Outline the features
Lightly draw the eye and nearby features on your paper using the “grid method” as described in class.

5) Color the base layer
Lightly introduce color pencil to the entire drawing with an “underpainting.”
The more gradients, the better!

6) Burnish
Going from the lightest colors to darkest, use hard pressure and burnishing to complete the drawing. Remember to keep gradients
