Objective

Create a dramatic image using simple studio lighting and creative editing.

Choose 2 subjects
Find a boy and a girl to shoot close-up shots of separately.

Take 15+ photos of each subject
Have your models keep a neutral expression as they look into the camera with flat or butterfly lighting so there are minimal shadows on their face and neck.

Guide the models through multiple angles/poses and shoot from both eye-level and slightly below to give you the best chance of success.

Open your best image of each model in Photoshop. Place each of the following steps in their own named folders.

Retouching: Carefully remove blemishes, freckles, moles, stray hair, etc. as they will distract from the effects. Add or remove hair using Generative Fill as needed for a balanced and dramatic composition.

Contrast: Use Curves adjustment layers and masks to strategically control the values of your image.

Eyes: Paint solid black over the irises, add creative effects like light rays, and optionally add larger eyelashes using the eyelash.abr file below for heightened contrast around the eyes.

Galaxy: Use the galaxy.abr file below to add stars and nebulae to the background. Make sure to paint in black.

Effects: Copy the following adjustment layers from the Effects.psd file below: Invert, Grain, and Gradient Map

Edit the invert mask by painting in black and white. This will take a long time and experimentation to get right!

You will need to adjust the gradient map and you may try different colors.

Photoshop: click on File > Export > Export As and select the JPG format.

Upload your final photos into a gallery block on your WordPress.com website.
