4.4 Sports Portraits

Objective

Practice using 3 lights to create dynamic and sporty portraits of school athletes.

Choose 2 athletes to model for a portrait. They should wear their team jersey and bring their sport’s paraphernalia.
Use the 3-light setup as shown in class to take 30+ photos of different poses. Make sure to encourage and guide your models!

Edit the photos using the following steps:

  • Retouch (blemishes, shadows, teeth, eyes, shape)
  • Dodge/burn the face
  • Dodge/burn the body
  • Subtle color grade (find a YouTube tutorial you like for this step)
Photoshop: click on File > Export > Export As and select the JPG format.

Upload your photos into a gallery block on your WordPress.com website.

Below, describe the objective of the project and how you approached it.

Novice (50%)

Student does not complete all steps, take 30+ photos per model, and/or submits work incorrectly.

Apprentice (80%)

Student completes most steps, almost takes 30+ photos per model, or has a weak attention to detail.

Master (100%)

Student completes all steps, takes 30+ photos per model, and a has strong attention to detail.

Grandmaster (Extra Credit)

Student completes 3+ portraits at the master level.
